![]() In otherwords, I gave up on realism, and went for clarity and convenience. I've seen some superior performances that way.įor cover situations, I'm tickled with a Martin D Jr and factory Fishman Sonitone pickup that I run thru an older LR Baggs Para Acoustic preamp. The best of course, is a house system supertuned by lifetime experts in a dedicated performance hall relying on mics. It probably took him quite a while to assemble and program that, but it works like no other portable system I've seen. Probably 20k worth of a tall rack of equipment, supertuned for his guitar, with quick pre-programs for all environments. The max effort I've seen for a live performance, is Tommy Emmanuels rig that he takes with him. Its all about choices and level of effort. None will replicate a good mic in a studio environment, which can't replicate a great guitar unamped in a good room. Then you start looking at the ones that mix in a mic. You'll discover next, that external pre-amps are better than onboard amps. Next you will discover how important the pre-amp is. If you spend some time surveying all the different pickups, you'll discover most are similar, with a couple standouts. You also don't have to install any electronics or a battery. One nice thing is that you don't affect the setup so you don't have to sand the saddle. If I was installing a K&K in a normal guitar it would take about 1 hour of labor - positioning and gluing the piezo dots, reaming and installing the output jack. 1990s Dean Markley K-50 Guitar Amp 12' Speaker 50 Watts Solid State K50 TESTED Pre-Owned C 261.37 Top Rated Seller or Best Offer +C 115.48 shipping estimate from United States Sponsored Dean Markley K75 Combo Amp Cover, Water Resistant, Black by Tuki (dean003p) Brand New C 95.36 Buy It Now +C 46. The US made K&K is right around a hundred bucks, there is a Chinese version for a lot less. The usual install requires an external pre amp or DI box to match impedance and to shape the sound - depending on your signal chain there are options here. It has the most reasonably accurate acoustic sound, bettered only by the microphone. ![]() The K&K consists of three little pieze dots that glue to the bridge plate (or double stick tape, I always us gel CA). If cost and time are not an issue that is my choice. The combination mic plus UST is probably the best but is expensive, a bit of a hassle to install and can feed back. I don't particularly care for the sound of either UST's or magnetic pickups, however they can be blended and EQ's to sound reasonable. I install a variety of pickups for people, including under saddle piezo (Fishman, LR Baggs), sound hole magnetic (also Baggs), some of the combination UST + mic, but my hands down fav is the K&K Pure Mini.
